During World War II, a pipeline was built to transport
fuel from one ocean
to the other in the
event the Panama
Canal was obstructed.
Fortunately, it was
never used. Today,
the road built to
maintain the pipeline
provides excellent
access to primary
forest within Soberania
National Park with
the comfort and safety
of vehicle support.
Located less than
an hour from Panama
City, Soberania's
293,000 acres boast
nearly 400 species
of birds including
the Black Hawk-eagle,
Black-cheeked Woodpecker,
Black-breasted Puffbird,
Broad-billed and
Rufous Motmot, Blue
Cotinga, Purple-throated
Fruitcrow, Masked
Tytira, Cinnamon
Becard, Fasciated
Antshrike, Shining
Honeycreeper, and
a great array of
migrants (during
the North American
winter months).
Soberania also contains 150 species of mammals
including fourteen
listed under CITES
(endangered) and
59 endemic plant
species in four life
zones. After a late
morning picnic lunch
visit the Harpy Eagle
aviary at the Summit
Gardens.
